FASHION POLICE: SINEM CHECKS OUT THE SAG RED CARPET

SINEM IN THE FAB HOUSE!

Hello FAB Ones!

I can't believe it's already been a week.., Crazy, right?

We've been so busy working on the next issue that we've somehow lost sense of time. Yup, you guessed it, it's coming to those three/four weeks where your Editrix is going to surrender having a life all in pursuit of bring you another FABulous issue of FAB.

Okay, so what does Sinem do when the heat is on and the deadlines are tight? Why, take to the internet of course and ogle anything that is worth of procrastination - when I say 'anything', my FAB people, I do mean ANYTHING! And this week that 'anything' came in the shape of red carpet images for the SAG (Screen Actors Guild) Awards which was held on Sunday 30 January in Los Angeles. Hence, following Wale's fashion police post yesterday on the hots and nots of the Future Awards green carpet, I decided to turn my gaze on a different carpet miles away. No fancy colours in LA, just the same old boring red - but the outfits displayed were anything but...

Without further ado, here's my humble 'fashion police' from the SAG red carpet - on a downward sliding scale from Hotness to Hot Mess...

Let's start with those who got it right:

Sofia Vergara continues to dazzle the red carpets of LA with putting a fashion-conscious foot forward; this time in an electric blue plunge-neck Roberto Cavalli (only a couple of weeks after her stunning appearance in Vera Wang at the Golden Globes) On the red carpet interviews she said, "I feel like a Cavalli girl" - you've got that one right, Sofia. And she's rocking those curves.

Annette Benning showed her golden oldie credentials with a golden show stealer - a Tony Ward couture dress accessorised with Martin Katz earrings and bangles. Timeless elegance.

Hilary Swank seemed to have got the Golden Globes nude/blush trend memo a couple of weeks late but still, she looked dazzling in  blush Versace with jeweled details made more dazzling by Kimberly McDonald jewelry, VBH compact clutch.

Red? Check. Lace? Check. Elegant? Check. Tina Fey is on to a winner with her red lace Oscar de La Renta gown and platinum and diamond Lorraine Schwartz earrings and ring.

Even if you don't agree, you have to admit, it's certainly a step up from her Adams-Family-meets-romantic-goth Golden Globes appearance.

This one was a bit controversial: Modern Family's Julie Bowen in a Catherine Malandrino jumpsuit accessorised with Neil Lane sparklers. Some said it was 'not the done thing' to rock a jumpsuit at an awards show red carpet, some said she looked elegant. I'm in the later camp. Effortlessly elegant. Come on people, have you not got eyes?

Could do better:

Gorgeous Azzaro column dress with sequined detail accessorised with $2 million of Tiffany & Co. jewels and a Roger Vivier black satin clutch that made the blooming beauty    Natalie Portman say, "I don't want to advertise that. I feel like someone might come chop my ears off or something. I need my ears." I don't care much about the ears, Natalie, but what's with the hair?

I know Glee star Diana Agron's beaded tea-length Chanel Haute Couture dress went down a storm, but I can't help but think she has not got the curves to fill this dress like, say, Dita Von Teese would. And those platform pumps, as cute as they may be are a little bit lacklustre...

Methinks Glee's Lea Michele played it safe with this Oscar de la Renta number dressed with a Swarovski clutch and $1 million in Tiffany & Co. jewelry. Nothing more than safe though. That said, way better than the bubblegum pink number that wore her at the Golden Globes.

The not-so-desperate-and-smoking-hot-housewife Eva Longaria seems to be out to show her wayward ex just what he is missing with the deep plunge-neck Georges Hobeika gown, but somehow it shortens her torso making her look a bit stocky. Gone is the gorgeous figure-hugging Zac Posen gown full of drama and dreamy lines.

What were they thinking?

It may sound like blasphemy for some of you Christina Hendricks/Mad Men-worshipping fashionistas out there, but I hate this L'Wren Scott wrap. I. HATE. IT. It may be 70s inspired, it may be velvet, it may be sequined. It still fails to do any favours to Christina's killer curves. A big fat zero.

Now let's remember those killer curves so masterfully displayed in a Romona Keveza gown at the Golden Globes.

Another red carpet, another epic fail for Jennifer Lawrence. Her Golden Globes ensemble does not bear writing about, let alone display with an image here, so the hopes that she'd up her game for the SAGs were stilted when she turned up a hot mess. A hot pink Oscar de la Renta gown with a side slit is a winner on paper, yet on the red carpet, on a frumpy looking Lawrence it certainly was a miss.

Winona (Ryder, who else?), shop-lifting circa 1990 was embarrassing enough, but showing up on the red carpet in 2011 in an Alberta Ferretti gown that says more 80s wedding? Enough said!

She's only young, she'll learn. Some may consider True Grit's Hailee Steinfeld's stripy Prada number a breath of fresh air in a belljar of nudes, red and blacks, but this, for me, is a popsicle disaster. Lots of stripes, no star!

And that's all folks. Check out the gown, drop a line, have your say. Otherwise, I'll meet you at the next red carpet!

  1. What in the world was Hailee wearing, she does remind me of a Popsicle truly. Sofia Vergara was hands down the best dressed on the red carpet.

We need to get you out there doing more red carpet write-ups, I actually enjoyed this read, very easy, light and fun read.
